| Greetings Families! The month of October brought a change in season and along with it a variety of Fall themes. All of the classes were able to fully enjoy the extended warm weather as well as the falling leaves. Art
projects utilized outdoor materials and Fall recipes were introduced during snack time. The Gatos and Duendes had a visit to a nearby organic farm, and the Estrellitas have reschedule their trip for
the Spring. We also were invited to host a 'Day of the Dead' celebration at Carnegie Library.
The photo below shows the preparation of the sugar skulls which were later decorated by our students and placed on the
Altar. Thanks to everyone who joined us for this celebration and in supporting Escuelita! Please read on for more information about our recent activities. |
Welcome!
This month we have welcomed three new families.
Kiran Grant (parents Malikah and Brian), Lauren Armant (parents Tracey and Jay) and Serena Thompson
(parents Daniela and James) have all joined the Estrellita Class. *New contact lists will be distributed via email soon. |
| Gatos
The Gatos found new ways to work with vowels using yarn and burlap
as well as the magnet board. They also practiced writing their names. They followed the growth of bean plants
by graphing the growth on charts and they built a city using recycled boxes. They compared the absorbency of different
materials; sponge, cotton and other fabrics. And they painted leaves and used other natural materials representative
of Fall to create art projects. In the kitchen the Gatos prepared Pizza, Puerto Rican 'Tortitas', Apple Cake
and Day of the Dead Bread. |
Duendes
Themes this month were Fall, Body Parts, the Five
Senses and the Farm. In addition to their field trip to Mildred's Daughters Farm they also made
a trip to the Squirrel Hill Library as well as the local pet supply store. Duendes also spent time outdoors looking
at the leaves and discussing the different changes in the season. Their art projects included making
a Fall mural with leaves, petals, water colors, paints and glitter. They also made hens, porcupines and painted skeletons.
In the kitchen, the Duendes made French bread and quesadillas from scratch. | |
| Estrellas
During the month of October projects revolved around
shapes and colors. They explored color outside by being creative with the leaves as well as by painting on easels
and using water colors.
The Estrellas worked with wood chips and paper mache cut-outs to compare the shapes of
circles and squares.
In addition to their usual bread recipe Estrellas also made an excellent batch of focacia
bread. |
Colibri
The Colibri class enjoyed exploring different sized
cardboard boxes. Some were large enough to climb into, while others they made into cars. They made tunnels
with some of the boxes and finally painted the boxes and made houses. They also learned about different
animals through stories and puppets. |
